Puerto Rico Blog #1
When I first heard about the senior trip to Puerto Rico, I knew I was going. I wanted to experience the food, the culture, the views, and I wanted to connect with people on the island. I also wanted to learn about the history of the island and assist after Hurricane Maria. Overall, I was filled with excitement throughout most of the Fall 2019 semester. As our departure got closer, I was definitely in high spirits. However, I started hearing about the earthquakes the week of the trip. I immediately started checking where the earthquakes were occurring and how far our Airbnb was from the location. To be honest, I was relieved to see that we were far from the earthquake activity. I kept checking each day because I had some family members tell me not to go and I saw posts on Instagram that stated ’Pray for Puerto Rico’, which was scary but I just wanted to track the activity, and comprehend why it was occurring to make my final decisions about the trip. When I saw there wasn’t any major earthquake on Wednesday and Chloe’s geology professor stated it would be okay, I decided to go on the trip. So far, I am really happy with my decision. I have been enjoying the weather, the views, our group, the new people we have met, and I am really excited to do service tomorrow.
